Guatemala Energy Natural Gas

On October 6, 2026, Guatemala announced a new Open Tender for up to 600 MW to secure firm capacity and energy for the country’s three regulated distribution companies. Together, these companies serve the vast majority of regulated electricity customers in Guatemala, making this one of the most consequential power procurement processes in Central America in recent years.

Guatemala’s electricity market is experiencing sustained growth. Early 2025 electricity demand increased 2.8% year-over-year, while peak power demand reached a 6.7% increase (2,204 MW) compared to the same period in 2024. Government projections anticipate electricity demand could double over the next decade, creating significant opportunities for new generation capacity and energy infrastructure investment.

The tender, commonly referred to as PEG-6-2026, includes 450 MW for new generation and 150 MW for existing plants, with natural gas and geothermal identified as eligible technologies for new projects. New facilities must use new synchronous-generation equipment and meet a minimum 90% firm-energy requirement.

The procurement creates opportunities for U.S. natural gas and geothermal developers, EPC contractors, LNG and gas suppliers, power generation equipment manufacturers, and engineering and financial services providers. Natural gas proposals must reference the Henry Hub index and provide fuel supply and import logistics information.

The bidding process opened on October 6, 2026, with the final award expected to be issued on May 6, 2027. Companies interested in participating must acquire the bidding documents and complete the applicable registration and documentation requirements. Foreign companies without a branch in Guatemala must also designate a legal representative or attorney-in-fact domiciled in Guatemala to participate in the tender.
