Ghana Design and Construction Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Project
The Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway is a flagship infrastructure project that will connect the capital cities of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria via a six-lane, dual carriage highway. Spanning more than 1000 km, the road would pass through the fastest growing urban corridor in the world for the next two decades. This region along the Atlantic coastline of West Africa is expected to reach a population of 175 million people by 2050 and covers 75% of the volume of West African trade.
The new road seeks to ease the transit of both passengers and goods. It will facilitate trade by integrating more than eight border crossings. It will interlink with the larger Dakar-Lagos corridor. The project is a part of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), which is a joint initiative of the African Union, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Planning (NPCA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, through its Department of Infrastructure, serves as the Executing Agency for the project. It will coordinate implementation on behalf of the Corridor Member States. The African Investment Forum, founded and led by the African Development Bank along with eight partner institutions, has provided significant funding to the project.
Work on the roadway is expected to start in 2026 with completion by 2030. The segment passing through Ghana is the longest at 520 kilometers. The routing of the corridor is expected to go through the following Ghanaian towns and cities: Elubo, Apimanim, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Saltpond, Winneba, Accra, Tema, Kasseh, Akatsi, and Akanu, which is on the border with Togo. The Ghanaian segment of the highway is expected to cost more than $8.8 billion.
