Croatia Smart City Lights

Croatian cities are actively developing Smart City projects supported by various EU funding. In March 2020, the City of Zagreb’s officials approved Action Plan for the $170 million-worth project Energy Efficient Reconstruction of Public Lighting in Zagreb city area (RePubLEEc). The aim of the project is to modernize at least 70% of public lightning, to reconstruct and replace lighting poles and cables, and to install remote control system for the operation of the public lighting system equipped with sensors and cameras which will measure pollution and air quality, noise, availability of parking spaces, the number of people and city traffic. The project will help the City of Zagreb to achieve savings in operating costs (electricity and maintenance), reduce light pollution and increase road and pedestrian safety standards for the citizens.

The project will be co-funded by the European Local Energy Assistance (ELENA) and European Investment Bank (EIB).  Public tenders for the projects are expected in summer 2020, while work on the lightning system should start at the beginning of the 2021 and should last 36 months.

Zagreb’s public lighting system consists of  2,045 metering points, 2,730 km of power lines, 107,000 lighting sites with about 120,000 luminaries. Total installed capacity is about 19 MW.  The existing public lighting system is in a relatively good condition due to good management and regular maintenance, but mostly technologically outdated and energy inefficient.
