Côte d’Ivoire - Port of Abidjan Expansion and Modernization
Opportunity for U.S. companies to partner in the Port of Abidjan’s $2 billion modernization and capacity expansion.
The Port of Abidjan, one of West Africa’s busiest maritime gateways, is undertaking a 2 billion USD modernization and expansion initiative designed to double its operational capacity by 2030, enhance multimodal connectivity, and reinforce its role as a regional trade hub. The program offers significant opportunities for U.S. companies across engineering, port infrastructure, digital technologies, logistics, security, and environmental services.
Key areas of opportunity include:
- Infrastructure Development: The expansion plan includes major upgrades to quays, terminals, road networks, and rail connections to improve cargo flow and integrate the port more closely with regional trade corridors. U.S. engineering, construction, and infrastructure firms can support the design and delivery of new port facilities, container terminals, access roads, and multimodal transport links.
- Digitization and Technology Integration: Ivorian authorities are accelerating the digital transformation of the port, including the integration of artificial intelligence to improve cargo management, customs processes, and port security. U.S. technology companies specializing in port automation, AI-driven logistics, tracking systems, and data platforms can supply advanced solutions for vessel traffic, electronic manifests, and operational optimization.
- Port Security Enhancements: The modernization program places strong emphasis on security, with new investments in scanning systems, digital surveillance, crew and vessel management tools, and risk-monitoring platforms. U.S. firms with expertise in maritime security, compliance technologies, and cargo-screening equipment are well-positioned to support these upgrades.
- Environmental Sustainability: Sustainability is a core element of the port’s long-term strategy, highlighted during its recent 75th-anniversary initiatives. Opportunities exist for U.S. companies offering green port technologies, energy-efficient systems, emissions-reduction solutions, environmental monitoring, and coastal ecosystem management.
- Logistics and Supply Chain Services: Handling more than 24,000 vessel calls and 1.6 million containers in 2024, the Port of Abidjan continues to expand its logistics footprint. Growing cargo volumes are increasing demand for modern warehousing, cold-chain capacity, value-added logistics, and optimized supply chain services—areas where U.S. logistics and service providers can engage.
