CHINA HEBEI METALLURGICAL COAL MARKET

U.S. coal shipments to China leaped more than 30-fold in the second quarter of 2021.  Deliveries surpassed 2.4 million tons compared to just 75,000 tons a year earlier.  China has transformed into the second-largest market for U.S. coal exports, behind only India.

Tangshan, a city in Hebei Province, has two major coking coal ports, Jingtang and Caofeidian.  Almost one-fifth of seaborne cargoes go to Jingtang for port clearance.  The annual container throughput of Jingtang exceeded 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2020, while that of Caofeidian was over 800,000 TEUs.

Jingtang and Caofeidian are two of the fastest growing ports in the world and have extensive capacity for U.S. coking coal imports and warehousing.
