Grid Transmission Distribution Brazil

Brazil Energy Grid Infrastructure

ANEEL is advancing two major transmission auctions - totaling R$ 11.3 billion (USD 2.09 billion) across 25 states - that will expand Brazil’s grid infrastructure and create significant opportunities for U.S. exporters of high-voltage equipment, advanced grid technologies, and digital solutions.

The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) is moving forward with two major transmission auctions, attracting R$ 11.3 billion (USD 2.09 billion) in investments across 25 states.

Auction No. 4/2025 – October 31, 2025

The draft notice for Transmission Auction No. 4/2025 has been submitted to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU). The auction will offer 11 lots in 13 states, with R$ 8 billion (USD 1.48 billion) in investments. Projects include 1,178 km of transmission lines, 4,400 MW of transformation capacity, automatic reactive power controls, and seven synchronous compensators, with construction timelines of 42–60 months.

Auction No. 1/2026 – March 27, 2026

ANEEL has opened Public Consultation No. 28/2025 for Transmission Auction No. 1/2026, covering five lots in 12 states, with R$ 3.31 billion (USD 612 million) in investments. Projects include 661 km of transmission lines, 2,400 MVA of transformation capacity, and five synchronous compensators. Two lots exceed R$ 1 billion: Lot 3, for compensators in Rio Grande do Sul and Ceará, and Lot 5, for 505 km of lines and three substations in Mato Grosso and Pará. Lot 3 will use a cross-bidding methodology to ensure lowest cost. ANEEL also highlighted potential integration of battery storage systems in future auctions, aligned with Brazil’s Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan (800 MW by 2031).

Opportunities for U.S. Exporters

U.S. firms typically supply technology and services to winning consortia rather than bidding directly. Opportunities exist in high-tech, high-value equipment and services that Brazilian firms may lack, including:

  1. High-Voltage Equipment & Components: Transformers and switchgear; Circuit breakers and relays; and Conductors and cables.
  2. Advanced Grid Technologies: Synchronous compensators; FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems); and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  3. Digital Solutions & Services: SCADA systems; Cybersecurity solutions; and Predictive maintenance tools leveraging AI and IoT.

These auctions represent a significant market for U.S. exporters to support Brazil’s expanding transmission network and integration of renewable energy.
