Brazil Energy Biogas and Biomethane Sector Opportunities
Brazil’s booming biogas and biomethane sectors offer high-growth potential for U.S. technology, equipment, and service providers.
Brazil’s biogas market is already one of the largest in Latin America, with over 930 operational plants producing 2.8 billion Nm³ annually. Yet this represents less than 2% of its estimated potential. Abundant agricultural residues, livestock manure, and municipal waste create vast feedstock availability, while national programs like RenovaBio and Proinfa encourage new capacity. U.S. exporters of anaerobic digestion systems, gas handling equipment, CHP units, and emissions monitoring solutions are well-positioned to meet rising demand for reliable, efficient, and scalable technologies.
Biomethane – purified biogas equivalent to natural gas – is smaller in scale but growing rapidly, supported by strong federal and state-level policies, quality standards, and blending mandates. Production grew 82% year-on-year in 2022, with new plants planned to serve transport, industrial, and pipeline markets. This expansion opens doors for U.S. suppliers of upgraded systems, gas compression, storage, and distribution solutions.
With Brazil targeting energy diversification, rural development, and transport decarbonization, U.S. companies have a timely opportunity to supply high-performance equipment, project engineering, and operational expertise to both established biogas plants and emerging biomethane facilities.
