Austria Electric Vehicles Transform Local Market

Electric vehicles are transforming the automotive market in Austria.

Hybrids Lead and Fully Electric Vehicles see Rapid Growth

Austrians are moving decisively toward electrified mobility. In 2025, hybrid-electric motors were the most popular vehicle type, accounting for 39% of new registrations. Gasoline combustion engines still account for 28% of new cars sold, but registrations actually fell by 5% in 2025. The real surprise, though, is the rapid adoption of battery electric vehicles. In 2025, one in five new cars sold was a fully electric vehicle. Notably, the share of electric cars registered by private individuals rose from 21% to 36%.

EU Wide Trend Toward Electrified Mobility

This reflects a larger pattern unfolding across the EU, where electric vehicle adoption is accelerating dramatically. Battery electric and plug in hybrid models are gaining market share quickly, while traditional hybrids hold the highest share of new registrations. Diesel and petrol vehicle registrations are falling rapidly. For U.S. companies, this momentum signals a growing continental market for EVs, components, and charging solutions. Key drivers behind this transition are:

  • High fuel prices
  • Broader availability of affordable electric cars
  • Expanding charging networks
  • State subsidies across many European countries for EVs

China’s Growing Presence on the Austrian Automotive Market

Though most Austrian EVs are European models, Chinese manufacturers are rapidly altering the landscape with aggressive pricing strategies and impressive performance. Chinese automakers are also leveraging local production capacities. Magna Steyr, a contract manufacturer, is assembling XPeng and GAC vehicles for the European market, helping avoid high EU tariffs. Further Chinese EV assembly locations in numerous EU countries are expected to come online in 2026 and 2027.

Strategic Opportunities for U.S. Businesses:

  • Attractive and reliable electric vehicles in all price classes are likely to fare well in Austria.
  • Austria’s charging network is set for rapid expansion as the government aims to ensure nationwide access to fast charging points. The shift toward fast and ultra fast chargers creates real opportunities for U.S. suppliers of 23 kW+ charging solutions.
  • EV charging puts pressure on the electricity grid. Austria’s E-Control has launched procurement for second generation smart meters with enhanced data capabilities, creating clear entry points for U.S. firms specializing in metering and grid digitalization technologies.
