Australia Automotive and Aftermarket Industry
Australia continues to present valuable opportunities for U.S. vehicle and parts exporters. Australia remains a promising market for U.S.-built passenger vehicles and light trucks, particularly in the full-size pickup and SUV segments. While overall new vehicle sales moderated in 2024 after reaching record highs in 2023, demand for durable, high-performance light trucks and vans remains strong. Australia’s vast geography, high vehicle ownership rates, and affinity for utility vehicles create favorable conditions for American exports.
U.S. full-size pickups, off-road-capable SUVs, and work-ready vans are increasingly popular with buyers seeking strong towing capacity, rugged performance, and advanced driver-assist features. U.S. manufacturers benefit from Australia’s preference for powerful, comfortable vehicles suited for both lifestyle and work purposes. Although Australia mandates right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles, demand for U.S. models has grown through factory-backed local conversions, making the market increasingly accessible.
In 2024, 3,239 Ram 1500s, 3,862 Chevy Silverados, and 2,428 Ford F-150s were imported into Australia, which is significant given the RHD conversion requirements. By comparison, 62,593 Ford Rangers, 53,499 Toyota HiLuxes, 30,194 D-Max and 17,526 BT-50 Mazdas were sold in the Australian market in the same year. The Ford Ranger is the biggest selling passenger vehicle in the Australian market.
Australian buyers value reliability, strong aftersales support, and vehicles suited to both city and off-road conditions. U.S. automakers offering RHD models or partnering with local conversion and distribution specialists are well-positioned to serve this niche but growing segment. Establishing relationships with local distributors—particularly those experienced in RHD conversion and Australian Design Rules (ADR) compliance—can open new sales channels. Participating in major auto expos and off-road events also helps build brand awareness among Australian consumers and dealers. The expanding electric vehicle (EV) market also presents a future opportunity, especially in the premium and utility EV space.
Beyond vehicles, there is a strong market in Australia for high-quality U.S. made performance parts and accessories for the offroad sector. Australia has long been a strong market for high-performance parts, dating back to the 1960s–90s when GM, Chrysler, and Ford manufactured vehicles locally. Many of these cars are still driven today and use U.S.-derived powerplants. Many of these vehicles have been upgraded with U.S.-sourced performance parts. Australia’s love of off-roading is legendary and many of the offroad parts that come from the United States will bolt on to the light 4X4s sold in Australia including Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mitshubish Triton, GM Colorado, Isuzu D-Max and others.
Key success factors for American manufacturers include:
Partnering with local RHD conversion firms and compliant importers.
Tailoring vehicles and accessories for Australian terrain, towing needs, and safety standards.
Ensuring vehicles and accessories meet ADRs.
Engaging with local distributors and participating in automotive expos to build brand recognition. The Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo is the largest aftermarket show on the Australian calendar. The next exhibition will be held in Melbourne, May 14-16, 2026 - https://autoaftermarketexpo.com.au/.
In summary, despite structural challenges, Australia remains a strategic long-term market for U.S. vehicle exports. For more information contact the U.S. Commercial Service in Australia: Duncan Archibald, Commercial Specialist, Sydney, duncan.archibald@trade.gov.
