Argentina Franchising
The Argentine franchising sector is regulated under the Civil Code and has become one of the most dynamic business models in the country’s retail and services landscape. With approximately 1,900 companies operating under this format, the market offers opportunities for U.S. franchises seeking expansion. The sector continues to grow steadily, with new openings rising by 9.23% in 2024.
FRANCHISE FORMATS
There are three main types of commercial franchising models utilized in Argentina:
• Individual Franchise (Business Format Franchising): Grants the franchisee the right to operate a single unit in a designated territory.
• Master Franchise: Grants a national, regional, or provincial territory, allowing the franchisee to open their own units and appoint sub-franchisees.
• Development Franchise: Provides exclusive rights to develop a specific territory with franchise units under the franchisee’s management and supervision. Sub-franchising is not permitted without the franchisor’s consent.
INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK
The Argentine Association of Brands and Franchises (AAMF) represents the sector nationally. It is an industry association dedicated to promoting, defending, professionalizing, and researching franchising and licensing systems. The AAMF actively participates in the World Franchising Council and the Ibero-American Franchise Federation, connecting Argentina’s industry to international networks. For U.S. franchisors, membership in the International Franchise Association (IFA) is advantageous not only because of its partnership with AAMF, but also because compliance with IFA standards eases adaptation to Argentina’s legal requirements.
MARKET OVERVIEW
The Argentine franchising sector is predominantly domestic: 95% of franchises are of local origin, while 5% are foreign brands. Leading international players include companies from the United States, Spain, Canada, Japan, Italy, and Brazil. Argentina ranks second after Brazil in the export of franchises within Latin America.
The most prominent franchise segments are Gastronomy, Specialized Businesses, Apparel & Accessories, Services, Education & Training, Health, Wellness & Beauty.
