Market Overview
Thailand’s market for environmental technology is promising with an estimated annual value of $3-3.5 billion. The industry is expected to grow between 10-15% per annum (data prior to pandemic calculations). The major players in environmental technology are mainly split between the government sector (40%) and the private sector (60%).
Due to domestic technological limitations, Thailand imports 70-80% of its environmental equipment, with an emphasis on air pollution control and waste handling equipment. Japan is currently the largest supplier of environmental equipment to Thailand, with a competitive market share of about 30%. With over 7,000 Japanese manufacturing facilities in the country, Thailand has often demonstrated a preference for Japanese equipment. Thailand’s second largest supplier is Europe with a market share of about 20%. The United States is the third largest supplier with a market share of about 15%.
U.S. equipment maintains a positive reputation for reliability and durability, often drawing quality and pricing comparisons to its European counterparts. However, equipment from Japan and other areas of Asia are often more competitively priced. Within the next few years, China also expects to join this list as a major competitor as the country continues to pursue technological advancements in the environmental equipment industry. Ultimately, the Thailand market for the environmental sector continues to present substantial growth and investment opportunities for U.S. companies in the environmental sector.
