Mark Mitchell
Mark Mitchell is Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Middle East and Africa at the International Trade Administration within the United States Department of Commerce, where he oversees commercial engagement and trade promotion efforts across the regions in support of U.S. economic competitiveness, strategic partnerships and private-sector growth. In this role, he leads a team of Foreign Commercial Officers and local staff in U.S. embassies and consulates, and works closely with government counterparts, business leaders, and the interagency, throughout the Middle East and Africa.
Mr. Mitchell brings more than three decades of experience building and scaling technology and innovation-driven businesses across the United States and international markets. Throughout his career, he has served in leadership roles as a founder, chief executive officer, board member, advisor and investor, with expertise spanning energy and smart grid infrastructure, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital transformation, and emerging technologies.
A significant portion of Mr. Mitchell’s career has focused on international commercial engagement, particularly across the Middle East. Over more than two decades, he has worked extensively throughout the region, including in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, supporting initiatives related to innovation, entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, and economic development. His experience includes collaboration with government ministries, regulatory agencies, private-sector organizations, and emerging venture ecosystems in rapidly evolving markets.
Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Mr. Mitchell led a global advisory firm focused on cross-border investment, market development, and innovation initiatives connecting the United States with international partners, particularly in the Middle East. He is recognized for his ability to bridge commercial, technology, and strategic priorities across diverse markets and cultures.
Mr. Mitchell has maintained a longstanding academic and personal interest in the Middle East since his university years. Combined with extensive professional engagement across the region, this experience has contributed to a deep appreciation for the region’s economic importance, cultural diversity, and growing role in the global economy. His work consistently has focused on strengthening international commercial relationships, advancing innovation-driven growth, and supporting long-term economic resilience and competitiveness.
