Become an exporter of professional and business services

The Office of Finance and Professional Services (FPS) at ITA helps ensure that U.S. professional and business services suppliers can provide their services across the globe.

The Professional and Business Services (PBS) team advocates for and promotes the interests of U.S. providers of these services, including legal, accounting, and consulting services; architecture, engineering, and construction; education services; university and private sector research and development; and other business services. The PBS team is also a key source of expertise on services issues in U.S. trade agreement negotiations.

The sectors comprised within PBS industries pertain to professional, scientific, and technical activities that provide expert support to other industries. The numerous fields in this industry are connected by their reliance on highly skilled labor, and workers often require advanced degrees or certifications. An important contributor to employment and economic growth, private sector professional services in the United States contributed $2.7 trillion to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020.

Are you looking to become a global provider of professional services?

The PBS team can provide analysis on overseas market-specific opportunities for U.S. providers of professional and business services. They can also help identify which countries and regions would be best suited for your services.

Do you face policy or regulatory issues overseas?

PBS activities are regularly subject to licensing, certification, and other registration requirements to ensure specialists are properly qualified. Many such requirements ensure quality and efficacy of service, but complex and opaque regulations often pose unfair restrictions on services trade. Contact our trade specialists to discuss your trade issues.
