Malaysia Satellite Connectivity

The Government of Malaysia plans to extend 5G coverage to at least 85% of Malaysia’s rural population by the end of 2024, with the remaining areas served by broadband satellites.  To push this key national agenda, Telcos in Malaysia are expected to provide internet facilities directly to devices via satellite by 2025.

The government is seeking information about technologies that allow direct satellite internet access.  This technology will provide coverage to the rural population not served by 5G or other internet access and help the government achieve a goal of universal internet access across the country.

To support digital economy programs like this and others, the national budget for 2024 has allocated the Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) approximately $600 million.
