Overview
Zambia has a developing private and public health care system that provides diagnostic and curative medical services. Zambia benefits from extensive U.S. government assistance, primarily through the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), to scale-up integrated prevention, care, and treatment programs focused on achieving HIV epidemic control. Through the provision of over $5 billion in PEPFAR assistance since 2004, today over 1.1 million Zambians receive life-saving antiretroviral treatment as compared to 3,500 in 2004. The HIV incidence rate has been cut in half over the last decade, while the infection rate for children (0 to 12 months) born to HIV-infected mothers has dropped from 45 percent to two-percent in 2020. HIV prevalence is very high in Zambia, with approximately 14% of the adult population HIV positive nationwide, but with higher rates in urban areas.
