Reconstruction and Redevelopment
Last published date:

Overview

Following Hurricane Dorian in 2019, significant reconstruction efforts are still needed in Grand Bahama and Abaco the second and third most populous islands.  The redevelopment of downtown Nassau is also a major focus.  U.S. companies have opportunities in various sectors, including construction, non-oil and renewable energy, utilities management, water treatment, and critical infrastructure repairs.  The government’s redesign and rebuilding plans prioritize hurricane-resistant standards, incorporating them into topography design, temporary and permanent housing, and urban planning.  There are opportunities in infrastructure development, including airport and seaport upgrades and roadway improvements – all requiring traditional and prefabricated materials, capital equipment and supplies, and constructions services.

Leading Sub-Sectors

Promising sub-sectors include hurricane-sustainable construction materials, heavy equipment, utility scale renewable energy products and services, and energy efficient products and services.

Opportunities

Opportunities include reconstruction on Grand Bahama and Abaco, with emphasis on shelter and modular housing, energy infrastructure development, restoration of utilities, water treatment, and repairs to critical infrastructure such as air and seaports, roads, and telecommunications.  Also underway are new road projects on Cat Island, Long Island, Eleuthera, and Exuma, and airport redevelopment projects on Cat Island, Exuma, Long Island, Grand Bahama, Bimini, and other islands.

Downtown Nassau redevelopment offers specific opportunities, including the revitalization of commercial spaces, the enhancement of tourism infrastructure, and the creation of vibrant and livable urban environments.  U.S. companies can contribute to this by providing construction services, materials, and equipment project coordination and logistics management.
