New Year, New Opportunities for U.S. Businesses

The New Year is often a symbol of transition for people.
Many plan out lifestyle changes or new opportunities.
For American businesses, there are also changes. There are
also new opportunities. Year after year, more and more small businesses have
found opportunities in new markets. These opportunities have led to increased
profits and more jobs.
For 20 years now, the North American Free Trade Agreement
has helped open up opportunities for businesses with two of our largest trading
partners, Canada and Mexico. Our exports to NAFTA partners have more than
tripled since the agreement was signed, and those exports support millions of
I know more and more businesses will find opportunities to
export to our neighbors this year. Some others will learn about aviation
opportunities in Brazil on our upcoming trade
mission. The Discover
Forum in San Antonio will help companies learn how to do business in the
Middle East and Africa. We also have a Travel and Tourism Mission to Asia in March followed by April's Automotive Trade Mission to the growing market of India.
Our team will help businesses take on new markets, to make
their products and services available to even more consumers, just like we

Yes, the New Year is a time of transition. But for American
businesses, that transition is part of a trend. It’s the trend of export growth
that is supporting our economy, creating American jobs, and enabling
innovation. It's the trend under which we set another monthly export record in November 2013.
It’s a change in the DNA
of our economy – making trade an even larger part of American success.
I hope that businesses looking to expand in 2014 will take
advantage of assistance from the International Trade Administration and our
partner agencies in the U.S. government.
