Exports from U.S. Metropolitan Areas

This site provides data on exports of goods from major U.S. metropolitan areas, as defined in December 2008 by the Bureau of the Census. These data are based on an Origin of Movement (OM) ZIP-code-based series and are therefore not comparable with an OM state-based series, like that available from TradeStats Express. See the Bureau's Foreign Trade Division site for more information on OM Series. [-] The present pages display 2006, 2007 and 2008 dollar values of exports by metro area, by ten world destinations, and by 3-digit NAICS industry classification. [-]
The first two digits of the
North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
code designate the sector that represent general categories of economic activities, and the third digit designates the sub-sector. NAICS is a consistent system for
economic analysis across the three North American Free Trade Agreement partners: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. NAICS is built on a production-oriented or
supply-based conceptual framework in that establishments are grouped into industries according to similarity in the processes used to produce goods or services.
(NAICS replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) in 1997.)
These data result from a joint statistical research project by the
International Trade Administration
and the Bureau of the Census. Discontinued after the 1999 data series, the metro trade data project was revived for 2006, 2007 and 2008 and is scheduled for semi-annual updates.
No comparisons should be made between the two series, as the methodology has changed. |
