Manufacturing contributed $78.8 billion to Illinois’ overall economy in 2008, which was 12% of the total economic output of Illinois that year.
In 2009, the manufacturing sector employed 577,600 workers, accounting for 10 percent of Illinois’ total nonfarm employment. Average annual pay for manufacturing workers was $55,829 in 2009, compared to $48,388 for the overall workforce.
In 2008, nearly one-quarter (24.7 percent) of all manufacturing workers in Illinois depended on exports for their jobs (latest data available.) Illinois’ export shipments of merchandise in 2009 totaled $41.6 billion, the 6th largest export total among the 50 states that year. Illinois’ $5.5 billion increase in exports from 2005 to 2009 was the 8th largest among the 50 states.
